Acne and its causes

Acne is primarily a problem of blocked sebaceous (oil) glands, we classify acne into two broad group non-inflammatory (whiteheads and blackheads) and inflammatory (pimples, nodules and cysts) acne. Many reasons could stimulate the sebaceous glands to become bigger and more active. Their greasy secretion and the accumulation of skin cells near the gland opening leads to blockage of the sebaceous glands. Once blocked, bacteria grow easily in the glands which then lead to inflammation, redness, swelling and pus – and a pimple or acne is formed. TCM view on the severity of acne range from the constitution of the body. Too heaty and overly stress will lead to accumulation of toxins and that will reflect on the skin as oily skin, blocked pores and outbreaks.

TCM sees the face and the chest as the lung meridian controls and if the lung is heated, it will cause acne. When the diet is too rich and oily, causing the digestive system to generate internal heat is another reason. Hormonal changes during puberty and menopause will also result in acne growing into adulthood.
